Seal Salamander
Description: 3-5 in. (8-12.5 cm). Coloration is a light brown
or gray on back with dark distinct black or brown markings...sometimes
streaks or spots just scattered. The stomach is usually pale and
plain.
Habitats: Usually found in cool wet spots, shaded areas along
ravines and mountain brooks in the mountains of North Carolina.
Habits: The Seal Salamander is mainly nocturnal and can be found
perched on top of a wet rock, appearing like a seal. During the day, this
salamander hides under rocks and in shady locations.
Young: Juveniles have the light brown or gray coloration with
four pairs of orange-brown spots down the back.
