Neuse River Waterdog
(Necturus lewisi)

Size: 6-9 in. (15-23 cm)
Habitats:  This species is only found along the Neuse River and in the Tar River Basin in coastal/piedmont North Carolina.  Coloration on back is gray and slate colored.  The belly is usually rust colored.  Dark spots cover the entire body.  Also a distinguishing feature is that all four feet have four toes.
Young: Very spotted and may have a light stripe on the belly with dark flecks.
