Eastern Zigzag Salamander
(Plethodon dorsalis)

Description: 2-3.5 in. (6.5-9 cm). Coloration of body is dark gray with a "zigzag" stripe on back.  This stripe is red to yellow in color and usually the same color is seen on its belly.
Habitat: Usually found in wooded areas near springs or mouths of caves in the mountains of North Carolina.
Habits:  This very rare species hides under leaf litter, rocks, and rotten logs.  These salamanders are most active in the spring.
