Bog Turtle

Clemmys muhlenbergi

Size:  Between 3 and 3.5 inches (7.5-9 cm).
Description:  This is the smallest turtle in the UnitedState and the second smallest in the world.  Its most distinguishable feature is the bright orange patch found on each side of its head and neck.
Habitat:  Bogs and marshy meadows with slow and shallowstreams.
Range:  Two major populations exist in the U.S.--one inthe northeast (in NY, NJ and PA) and the other in the mountains of western North Carolina.
Status: Listed as a threatened species by both North Carolina and the World ConservationUnion.  Destruction of Bog Turtle habitat and its popularity in the pet trade have contributed to its decline.
