Atlantic Hawksbill
Size: 30 to 35 inches (76-89 cm) long and weighing 95 to 165 lbs
(43 to 75 kg).
Description: Scutes on their carpace tend to overlap one another.
Colored brown. Males may be distinguished from females by their long and
thick tails, bigger claws and more concave plastron.
Habitat: Salt water. Often found near reefs and shallow estuaries.
Range: From southern New England to southern Florida.
Status:
Listed as an endangered species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and protected
under U.S. law. The use of its shell in trade and commerce has been one
of the factors leading to its decline.
