Redbelly Turtle

Pseudemys rubriventris

Size:  10 to 12.5 inches (25.4-32 cm) long.
Description:  The carpace is often brown/black with vertical yellow/orange markings, while the plastron is orange to reddish.  Its skin is black with yellowish stripes.  It is the biggest of the basking turtles in the southeastern U.S.
Habitat:  Any freshbody of water, including, lakes, streams, and canals.
Range:  Found only in the mid-Atlantic states, including NC, VA, MD and NJ.  In North Carolina, Redbellies can be seen in the extreme northeastern region of the state.
Status:  Listed as a threatened species by the World Conservation Union.
