Stripeneck Musk Turtle
Sternotherus minor
Size: From 3 to 4.5 inches (7.5-10 cm) in length.
Description: Numerous dark stripes lining the head and neck of
this small turtle make it unmistakable. The carpace is keeled and either
gray or brown sometimes with dark markings, usually either streaks or spots.
The plastron is yellowish and unspotted, small, and has only one hinge.
Two barbells can be found on the chin.
Habits: Stripeneck Musk turtles are diurnal and do the majority
of their feeding in the morning.
Habitat: Extremely aquatic, these turtles can be found in rivers
and streams.
Range: Stripenecks are found in the mid-South region of the United
States. In North Carolina they are only found in the extreme western most
mountains of the state.
Diet: They are omnivorous, but prefer small snails and insects.
Status:
Listed as a special concern species by the state of North Carolina.
